WHEN Anthony Scala was eight-years-old, his mother saw an advert in the back of a women’s magazine for an Open Weekend at Peter Layton’s London Glassblowing.She thought it would be a good thing to take him along.His passion for glass was ignited and his association with the studio began. Scala continued to visit London Glassblowing regularly and then, when he was 14 he was bought a raffle ticket.The prize was a glassblowing class and his name was drawn out of the hat. ‘I still remember that first visit, it was incredible. I sat at the back of the studio transfixed…I couldn’t take my eyes off the furnace and molten glass. Then, to win a chance to actually have a go myself after watching for years was simply mind-blowing.’Despite this early encounter with glass, Scala’s initial training at university was as an architectural model maker.
